Of the quality of his work, Sheehan remarked ‘I would have given myself an F grade’ (presumably the grade average required to be a cruise-liner toilet cleaner is an E). Not only was he ridiculed on-screen by workers for his poor performance, he was also at one point recognised by a waitress. Sheehan was also reminded that the worst thing about working in the tourism industry isn’t just that the customer is always right, it’s that they’re also a singularity of joy that must require your undivided and extremely partial attention for the duration of your shift.

          So how will the 4,000 passenger ship change due to the show? First to get the chop is the virtually unused and labour intensive ice-rink. The show will also benefit competitors like Crystal Cruises because of the fortunate timing of the show. The program was aired right at the beginning of ‘wave season’, the period of the best deals and increased demand. There will be rewards also for Sheehan’s temporary co-workers, some of whom recieved promotions and free holidays. For my money, the staff member who expressed the idea that Sheehan had never ‘interacted with a woman before’ should be the first to get a Luxury Nile Cruise.

          Jamaican Port Remains Behind Schedule

          With America and Europe suffering a succession of ‘big freezes’, tourists are inevitably looking to get away to sunnier climes. More’s the pity for Jamaica, whose Falmouth cruise ship port remains unfinished in spite of promises of record passenger numbers and profits for the cruise industry in 2011. Royal Caribbean Cruises were scheduled to dock a number of ships in the dock (which they co-developed) during January, though this will not now be happening. The problems are attributable to labour strikes and other onsite problems. The Navigator of the Seas, the ship originally scheduled to enter the port on January 7th , was diverted to Montego Bay. Under the new schedule, the first ship won’t sail into Falmouth until February 17th. This will put extra stress on the Caribbean, which has a tight schedules and is expecting even more cruises to operate in 2011 than ever before. With the usual bout of later year weather issues, it could be a needlessly rough year for Caribbean cruises. Lines and passengers don’t have to settle for this on River cruises, to say the least.

          River cruises aren’t such a non-sequitur: they’re proving a valid and lucrative alternative to more traditional ocean cruises. When you’re cruising in the Caribbean, you expect brilliant weather as a matter of course. But it’s also a lot more effective as a cultural taster than simply going from port city to port city on the continent. River cruises such as Egypt cruises 2011 are a way of truly showcasing both sun and culture on the continent. But since cruise rivers are often hundreds or thousands of miles long, they offer a greater cross-section of a much larger nation. Whilst few would argue that the Caribbean is lacking in natural beauty or culture, the restricted landmasses do mean few urban centres, and a narrower range of geography than a river cruise can offer. The Caribbean is also rather restricted to a younger, more active crowd. Young couples with children are doubtlessly the most important cruise passengers for a region that is vivacious and active. But the traditional cruisers are more interested in slower paced, European holidays with fewer disembarkation opportunities. When this kind of traveller is looking for a cruise, Rhine river cruises are ideal.
